Hull urges world economic conference against economic nationalism

Secretary of State Cordell Hull called on the London world economic conference to oppose economic nationalism and urge all nations to join the American tariff truce. He pressed removal of trade barriers, a permanent international monetary standard with gold and silver, and easing foreign exchange restrictions for balance sheet reorganization where needed.

Roswell merchants hear bright agriculture outlook

J R Thomas and W A Wunch county agents in Chaves and Eddy counties told Roswell Merchants Association the agricultural situation looked brighter locally and nationally. The association announced a sales contest and a tourist information list to be available at the Chamber of Commerce. Thomas said farmers feel much better and markets for grain and cotton were rising.

U S 10 Accept British Part Payment Debt

The United States sent a conditional note to Britain approving a partial payment of the debt. President Roosevelt supervises the move with a pledge not to condone defaults. Banking reform act set to take effect after long agitation

Washington report notes radical changes to U S banking methods will begin to take shape immediately. Senator Carter Glass's bank reform act, described as possibly the greatest permanent legislation by a recent congress, is poised to become law with President Roosevelt's signature promised. The measure aims to correct conditions that led to bank failures and fueled booms and crashes.

Navy plans to start building 39 new ships

Washington reports the navy will begin construction on 32 ships as part of a three year $230 million program funded by the industrial public works bill. Plans include 20 destroyers 4 submarines two aircraft carriers and four 6 inch gun 10 000 ton cruisers one hybrid cruiser aircraft carrier for scouting. Washington June 14 AP.

Massachusetts votes to repeal Prohibition in 1910s era landslide

Massachusetts backed repeal by about four to one in statewide voting and ten to one in Boston. Three delegates per district were chosen to the constitutional convention, with 441 195 votes pledged to repeal and 98 884 to retain. Governor Ely welcomed the result and pledged an immediate convention. Local license trends showed strong gains for wets across rural areas.

Eight Hour Law Takes Effect Tomorrow in Roswell

The eight hour law for male and female employees becomes effective tomorrow. Many Roswell grocers plan seven to five hours, Saturdays seven, while others set their own schedules. Several merchants have signed the agreement including Hunter and Son and J C Penney Co. Records of hours worked will be kept for male staff and similarly for female workers in mercantile, office, hotel, and restaurant sectors.

Tax collections near a hundred twenty five thousand in June

Chaves county tax collections for the first 12 days of June totaled 124,617.87 with about 1,600 more likely in mail payments. Officials estimate the total will exceed 125,000, ending the no penalty period on delinquent taxes and improving the county’s financial position as the year closes.

R E Griffith Theatres Incorporated signs a deal to purchase the Princess theatre in Roswell, with fixtures and business included but not the building. The Yucca will share management, prices set at ten and twenty cents, and the Princess to operate weekends first then daily from September. Westerns and first run pictures planned. construction of a new Carlsbad theatre soon.

New Federal Tax on Gasoline Hits Revenue

Washington reports a half cent per gallon gasoline levy will raise about 62 million dollars annually after midnight when President Roosevelt signs the recovery works tax bill. The existing one cent a gallon tax, extended for a year, adds about 120 million dollars. Tax on dividends applies to declarations after enactment and to companies operating at fiscal year end June 30.

Mattern Goes Back to Siberia in World Flight

American aviator Jimmie Mattern faced storms and mechanical delays forcing him to land twice more at Khabarovsk Siberia. He had previously taken off for Nome Alaska before returning to eastern Siberia due to fog ice and bearings problems during his world flight attempt.
