The 35th Annual New Mexico Senior Olympics Summer Games opened at the New Mexico Military Institute Stapp Parade Field in Roswell with a Parade of Athletes. About 900 athletes from across the state compete in 90 events spanning 26 sports, with Roswell hosting most recently in 1988.

Roswell City Council schedules a public hearing Thursday at City Hall on 425 N Richardson Ave. to discuss an ordinance imposing a $2.50 per room per day fee on lodging facilities. The change follows a Legislature shift removing the population requirement from the Convention Center Financing Act, enabling smaller cities to levy such fees.
Deputies from Chaves County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic dispute on West Hobson Road. They found a 30 year old woman with visible injuries arguing with her 63 year old husband while a young girl battered a window. The wife denied the husband’s involvement.
Crowds fill Roswell Public Library for two Ken Karter ventriloquism shows tied to the national Dig Into Reading program. Kids met Ricky the Rat and a baby and a boy in a red T shirt as they sang ABC and learned reading basics.
Shay Dickinson, 38, pleaded no contest on two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor. One charge is a third degree felony and the other a second degree felony. The incidents dated to March 2012 and involved a pair of two year old victims.
An 16 foot tall wooden alien from Ruidoso arrived Friday in Roswell and now sits on a lawn in front of Powell Tires at 2007 SE Main. Weighing 1,500 to 1,800 pounds the carved figure is described as the town’s tallest extraterrestrial. See ALIEN, Page A3.
