Chaves County Commission rejected a proposed ban on all burning including open fires bonfires and waste burning at a mid month meeting in the county courthouse. Farmers argued bans hinder weed control and increased costs as humidity and fuel type affect safety.
Chaves County Commission formed a community task force to explore the potential sale of Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. The measure passed unanimously at the mid month meeting and will coordinate with Cain Brothers, the consulting firm hired to advise on the proposed sale.
Artesia School Board accepted the resignation of Artesia High School principal Steven Starkey who will become director of transportation and activities with Cloudcroft Public Schools. Rick Stewart, longtime vice principal since 1993, was appointed principal of AHS, creating a vice principal vacancy. The board also named Lisa Robinson as principal of Grand Heights Early Childhood Center.
Roswell city leaders and the City Council meet at 7 PM to discuss boosting design fees for Daniel B. Stephens & Associates Inc. by 271000, raising the total from 241000 due to state regulation changes and expanded project scope. City Manager John Capps cites underestimation and greater complexity.
President Clinton promised more federal help to probe arson against Southern black churches and urged Americans to cross racial lines to oppose hatred. He accused GOP critics of politicizing the issue while black leaders denounced the attacks and condemned divisive rhetoric from Barbour Armey Beasley and others. Clinton spoke in Greeleyville and urged civil rights support amid debate over affirmative action and federal funding.
Roswell city project engineer Louis Najar says Atkinson Avenue work will finish by the weekend, ahead of the planned Labor Day deadline. Crews tested sewer lines on Wednesday, with cleanup and painting remaining. construction began April 4 after a March 25 contract with Armstrong Construction Co. Only the Second and Atkinson intersection remains unrepaired due to a future NM Highway and Transportation Department plan.
