Laird Sees Vietnam Troop Pullout Moving U.S. Toward Peace
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird said Nixon's decision to withdraw 25,000 troops from Vietnam brings the United States closer to peace and marks a shift to Vietnamization. He noted that the exact units to depart will be chosen by a joint service task force in early July, with many troops to be held in reserve in Okinawa or Hawaii. Laird insisted the withdrawal signals resolve to allow South Vietnam to assume greater defense responsibilities.
