The 70 foot Da Vinci HI research balloon launched from Arrowhead Airport in St Louis County with four crew members to study urban air pollution and its transformation into hazardous pollutants. The balloon aims to drift toward Terre Haute Indiana or Indianapolis if extended, operating at 1000 to 3000 feet for up to 36 hours as part of Project Da Vinci.
Researchers will conduct about 25 experiments from the gondola to study how air pollutants change as they travel hundreds of miles from urban sources. Two chase vehicles will accompany the balloon and an EPA aircraft will follow to feed data to the crew. A Da Vinci III flight is planned from Arrowhead Airport later this summer.
The Daily Record reports that Robert R. Sims has been visiting communities to raise money to pay debts from his failed primary against Sen Joseph Montoya. Sims hints at possible endorsement of Jack Schmitt, though Schmitt campaign officials say no endorsement is confirmed.
Government geologists warned the Teton River Dam in Idaho was dangerous more than three years earlier. The dam burst during reservoir filling killing at least seven and leaving about 30,000 homeless with many missing. Warnings cited seismic risk, landslide potential, and water table rise. interior officials allegedly dismissed such cautions.
Weir District Court Judge Paul Snead rejected a defense bid for a new trial in the Jackie Slayton murder case. Slayton, 24, was convicted of second degree murder for the Jan 21 Roswell shotgun slaying of J C Cole. The judge questioned claims of a pretrial agreement and said the defense implied a fixed and mockery of the court.
The California primary ballot includes Proposition 15 the Nuclear Power Plants Initiative. If approved it could shut down three state nuclear plants by 1987 and affect two more under construction. Polls show public opinion deeply divided and national implications noted by observers.
Roswell officials urge retirees to move to the city as the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and Development promotes the area at the Iowa State Fair. Ray Campbell of the RCDC says a booth will be in Des Moines August, with about 700000 expected attendees over 12 days.
