Celebrating Fifty Years of Mutual Self-Help Housing
As National Homeownership Month opens, USDA highlights the Mutual Self Help Housing Program now in its 50th year. The program partners with more than 100 nonprofit groups to help very low and low income rural families gain homeownership through sweat equity and affordable mortgages. In 2014 USDA aided about 1,000 families with roughly 825,000 in equity and invested over 19.9 billion to assist nearly 140,000 rural residents buy homes. Native American, Hispanic, Latino, African American and other people of color have led the program, with women-led households accounting for 41 percent since 2008.
