Rennelly’s Stratojets Break Atlantic Speed Records

Fifteen B47 Stratojet bombers flew the Atlantic with precision, breaking Maj. Frank M. Rennelly’s U S to England speed record and shaving minutes off a direct flight record. The 3,120 mile transfer from Limestone Maine to Fairford England took 5 hours 22 minutes, as 45 planes arrived at 15 minute intervals for 90 days at Fairford with dummy atomic loads.

Milking contest highlights Clovis Pioneer Days

Clovis celebrated Pioneer Days with a milking contest near the Curry County courthouse where Mayor O. G. Potter tied for second alongside several mayors from Lovington Tucumcari Amarillo and Roswell. Gov. Mechem Amarillo officials and Queen Wilma Fulgham attended a day of events including a parade and a band concert.

Teen delivers baby boy at home in Florida

A 16 year old, Guy Brickman, helped deliver his mother's seventh son at an all night home birth in Hialeah Florida. He assisted after hours at a veterinarian office and kept calm as the baby came at about 9 15 p m. The doctor arrived and took mother and two sons to North Shore Hospital where both mother and baby were doing well.

Sundown teacher found guilty in self defense murder case

Jack Killingsworth, a Sundown school teacher, was convicted of murder with malice by a district court jury and received a five year suspended sentence. The trial considered whether Killingsworth shot Richard McChristial after a confrontation at Killingsworth’s car following revelations of a teacher-student affair. Testimony cited that McChristial grabbed for a rifle and Killingsworth fired. McChristial was shot 11 times.

Republicans Back Wortman For Chairman

At the Chaves County biennial convention in Roswell the movement to elect Frank Wortman of Dexter as state party chairman was proposed and endorsed. The meeting honored Republican women and James M. Man Dies in Lea County Accident

Lea County reports its tenth traffic fatality of 1953 when Doyle B. Pierce 22 of Lovington died Friday 11 miles south of Lovington. The car Pierce rode in struck a vehicle driven by Billy Johnson of Hobbs. Passengers Billy Johnson and W G Cooper of Lovington survived with no serious injuries.

Nurse Miss Payne Found Dead in West Third Room

Miss Alice Jean Payne aged 19, daughter of Mr and Mrs C W Payne, was found dead in her room at 406 West Third Street yesterday around 3 pm by her father. A Roswell nurse for three years at St Marys Hospital she had been in good health, with recent routines including a ball game Friday and a noon visit Saturday.

Warren Petroleum to Start Lovington Natural Gas Plant

Warren Petroleum Corp will start building a natural gas plant near Lovington New Mexico on June 15. Construction is by Flour Corp Los Angeles with completion expected February 1 1954. Initial facilities will gather and process gas from Lea County pools about 22 million cubic feet daily and produce 30000 gallons of natural gasoline 15000 gallons of butane and 31000 gallons of propane.
