Batton Killed by Mexican at Hope Saturday

Sheriff George Batton of Eddy County was shot and killed at Hope on Saturday night by Pedro Valentino, an escaped Huntsville prisoner. Valentino was also killed. Wilburn was wounded. two Mexican women acting as informants led investigators to the scene and were arrested as accessories. Batton had served Foldy county nearly two years and was widely known locally.

Attorneys agree on Henley prison term for killing merchant

Worth Texas June 5 Attorneys for the state and the defense agreed to recommend a fifteen year prison term when H J Henley 68 pleaded guilty in criminal court to killing L T Martin a merchant formerly of Dallas in front of the Martin store on May 13th In Henley s defense attorneys said he would take the witness stand and tell why he shot Martin today.

Washington June 5 coal miners won a great court victory as the supreme court held that the United Mine Workers need not pay damages exceeding six hundred thousand dollars to Arkansas coal mine owners from a 1914 strike and riots in the Arkansas fields.

Valentino Is Free Charge Of Bigamy

Rudolph Valentino walked from court in Los Angeles free on a charge of bigamy after Justice J W Hanby dismissed the case. The judge ruled that cohabitation had not been proven and that conviction was impossible in a superior court. He also said the penal code section used was unconstitutional and should be amended.

Irish Army Retreat From Ulster Amid Pettigo Battle

In Belfast on June 5 the Irish Republican insurgents retreat from Ulster after Pettigo on the Donegal-Fermanagh border. About thirty Republicans were reported killed in the Pettigo fight, with British troops taking the town yesterday. A British staff officer warned insurgents to leave within fifteen minutes. some complied, others stayed. Once the limit passed British forces entered under machine gun fire as hills shelled the area, four shells fired, casualties unclear. The British consolidated positions and prepared for further action against Sinn Feiners.

Cloudburst Damage Hits New York and Pennsylvania

Damage estimated at over two million dollars occurred from a cloud burst near Hancock in the Delaware river valley and from swollen streams after a heavy downpour in the Lackawanna river valley near Carbondale Pennsylvania.
