Balloting starts in New Mexico's 18th primary with 1 042 polling places and 94 absentee sites. Major races include governor and lieutenant governor, while Democrats face broader contests across statewide offices and all House seats. Turnout projections vary from 140000 to 184000 voters.
City officials won state approval to bypass bidding to negotiate improvements at Roswell Industrial Air Center tied to Greyhound Lines plant. The $300,000 work includes building modifications and a two mile railroad spur to connect to Santa Fe Railroad tracks.
Lovington High School plans to hire Barry Tinsley 32 as head football coach starting the 1974 season. Tinsley, from Grants, is seen as a successful Class AAAA coach expected to boost the program that has struggled in recent years.

Robert Sanchez a Socorro native is named the tenth Archbishop of Santa Fe becoming one of the churchs youngest bishops and the first native New Mexican to hold the post The 40 year old priest former San Felipe Church Albuquerque pastor was ordained in 1959 studied in Rome and has served in Mosquero and at St Pius X High School now leading the archdiocesan Priests Senate and holding the honorary title of Vicar General
Chaves County Commissioners signed a $770 104 contract with W H Bauske and Co of Clovis for courthouse renovations. Work by architect Edwin C French is to finish within 400 days, by July 1 1975. Alternates totaling 126 496 were rejected to stay under the 750 000 voters approved budget.
