Super Show E H Robertson and Longhorn Fireworks staged a large night show for Roswell RIDC stockholders wives guests and the public drawing about 1000 attendees. Aerial bombs lit the sky with bright phosphorescent bursts and loud cheers rivaling July 4 displays while the bottle lighting crew performed swift jumps.
The Roswell Board of Education plans to hire Quinn and Co to assist in legal proceedings for a capital improvement bond. Fee set at 1 025 dollars. No middle school closures or other expansions noted. Cadet Gregory R Webb graduates from West Point and receives commission in the Air Force. Libby Childress wins the 1970 National Spelling Bee. Pete Domenici to address Chaves County Republican convention at Goddard High Little Theater.
Goddard High School awarded diplomas to 237 graduates at Wool Bowl Stadium in an evening ceremony. Co valedictorian Katy Puckett spoke along with salutatorian Mike Lilley and senior class president Jay Allen. The Aero Singers performed and the band provided music.
Twenty cadets at New Mexico Military Institute received ROTC honors in an annual awards program. Recipients include Harrin Forberr of Midland Texas Gen Samuel Goodwin Saber. Miss Carolyn Read delivered the senior address at Goddard's graduation exercises last night. Her speech was titled Thanks for the Memories and reflected on memories and gratitude.
Roswell Industrial Development Corp executive director Bob Hoffman reported to stockholders on industrial management progress for 1969 70 calling it the year of the 747. Hoffman spoke with stockholders Bill Wolf and Reed Mulkey at a barbecue at 747 Park RIAC prior to an outdoor meeting and extensive fireworks by Longhorn Manufacturing Co and H Robertson president.
State Republican Chairman Robert Davidson said he would decide later in June whether to remain as chairman. He stressed party unity after Tuesday's primary, noted fundraising challenges, and praised Pete Domenici and Carter campaign organizations for their vote-building, while naming eight potential successors to National Committeewoman Frances Lee.
Visit from Sweden student Kerstin Simmons will graduate tonight with her parents Col. and Mrs. Carl Gustaf Simmons in Roswell High School's audience. Her parents travel from Sweden via Japan for Rotary events and will attend the luncheon where Dick Mulkey of Roswell Rotary presented a Roswell club flag to Col. Simmons.
President Nixon announced that all US forces will be withdrawn from Cambodia by June 30 and 30,000 more troops pulled from Vietnam by October 15. He hailed the operation as the war’s most successful and said South Vietnamese and advisory troops will also be pulled out by the deadline.
Senior US officers say it is too early to judge if the Cambodian sanctuary push will yield long-term success. They credit the operation with large captures of enemy materiel but warn the crucial test is enemy efforts to restore supply routes to South Vietnam and whether South Vietnamese forces gain time to assume main fighting roles as US drawdown continues.
A TWA jetliner carrying 51 passengers was hijacked over Arizona and diverted toward Washington. The hijacker demanded $100 million in cash from the U.S. Treasury. Officials said $100,000 was prepared at Dulles Airport by TWA and Murphy indicated plans to comply with the demand while the investigation continues.
Roswell Mayor Bill Brainerd told RIDC stockholders the preliminary census figure of 33,100 is far too low and could hinder attracting industry. He cites 42,000 to 44,000 as Roswell’s population, urges corrections, and outlines Air Center expansion with new buildings planned by summer. The meeting highlighted past year growth, 300,000 cattle in Chaves County, and a 6,000 daily Air Center user base.
