Roswell Independent School District adopts a 76.91 million dollar operating budget for 2016 17, down about 3 percent from 2015 16. Assistant superintendent Chad Cole notes increased enrollment and higher recurring costs while revenues from the State Equalization Guarantee drop to 70.02 million.
North Main Street faced a multi month city project from April to late July causing 50 to 60 percent drops in customer traffic at stores such as Russell Cellular Verizon. Owners complain driveways blocked and access limited while City Engineer Louis Najar invites calls for access tweaks and coordination. The $2 million project targets sidewalk curb gutter and driveways.
A former UCLA graduate student killed a Minnesota woman and later fatally shot a young professor at UCLA before killing himself. Police say he had a "kill list" including the woman and two UCLA professors, and intended to kill a second professor but could not locate him.
Roswell's Spring River Park and Zoo hosts Outdoor Adventure Day for children 11 and under driven by a partnership with New Mexico Game and Fish Safari Club International and local agencies. The free event features a fishing derby archery and an indoor pellet gun range registration starts at 7 30 a m with derby at 8 a m the first 100 registrants receive a T shirt.
