Gardner defeats Roberts in New Mexico primary bid

Keith Gardner defeated incumbent Earlene Roberts in the state House District 66 primary, ending Roberts 16-year tenure. Gardner won 976 to 607 votes, with Chaves County swing by 299 in his favor, leaving him unopposed in the general election. Sunni leader named Iraq president amid turmoil

Capitan Mountains fire jumps containment lines northeast of Capitan

A lightning sparked wildfire in the Capitan Mountains shifted containment on Tuesday with a new spot fire. It threatens nearby structures though no evacuations were ordered. The blaze, reported May 15 in Lincoln National Forest, had grown to 33,550 acres and cost over $3 million to fight with 642 personnel, five helicopters, 21 engines, 17 water tenders and three bulldozers engaged.

Teenager and man hospitalized after South Atkinson shooting

Roswell police and Chaves County deputies responded to a 2 a.m. shooting on South Atkinson Avenue finding 26-year-old Martin Duran inside a residence with gunshot wounds and a 16-year-old, Manuel Jojella, located at another home. Investigators say witnesses are scarce and both victims are being questioned as leads remain limited.

Roswell investigates Memorial Day drive-by shootings

Police investigated a string of drive-by shootings during Memorial Day weekend in Roswell. Only two incidents on the Hendricks Street 1500 block appear related, while another on South Emerald Street around 2:30 am Sunday is under review. Investigators recovered .45 caliber shell casings and a spent shotgun shell as they gather witnesses.
