Unofficial counts show John B. Walker elected district judge over Samuel Laughlin Jr. by 3,245 statewide and 205 in Chaves County for the fifth judicial district created by the 1976 Legislature. Michael F. McCormick wins district attorney in Chaves Eddy and Lea counties. Leroy Carpenter reelected sheriff.
