Supreme Court Reverses Man's Murder Conviction

The Supreme Court overturned the murder conviction of Edward Boykin, an Alabama defendant who faced lethal punishment for robberies in Mobile. Two Injured When Cycle Strikes Cow in Roswell

State Police investigated two Sunday accidents near Roswell. A motorcycle driven by James L Rick Wilson and passenger Laverne Sanchez hit a cow on State road 409 near Bottomless Lakes leaving Wilson treated and released while Sanchez was admitted with knee and head lacerations but listed in good condition. A separate report described an overturned 1957 Mercury abandoned east of Pecos Valley Feedlots with investigators unsure of injuries or occupants and continuing the probe.

Multiple incidents listed with drivers and ages. Patricia Irene Jones received a citation for following too closely after a May 31 collision at Pecan and Atkinson. Biafrans Sentence 18 Oil Workers to Death

The Biafran forces sentenced 18 foreign oil workers to death after recovering 11 bodies from a clash near Okpai in midwestern Nigeria. The detainees, 14 Italians, three Germans and one Lebanese, were said to have fought with Nigerian troops. AGIP denied involvement, and Ojukwu had not yet confirmed the death penalty.

Five Arrested After Chase at Shamrock Truck Stop

State Police stopped a high speed chase at 3:30 a.m. linked to a cash register theft at Shamrock Truck Stop west of Roswell. Five suspects were booked into county jail on larceny charges: Raymond Richard Miranda 18 Eloy Ortega Najar 24 Lupe P. Funetez 20 Mary Lou Nunez 21 and a juvenile female.

Tijerina Leads Alianza Presbyterians Talks at Ghost Ranch

Reies Tijerina and Alianza members confront about 100 synod delegates at Ghost Ranch near Coyote over church lands. The three hour meeting produced no resolution on releasing Ghost Ranch lands. Alianza seeks recognition as the representative of Spanish Americans while the church says it will not yield to pressure. James W. Hall says assembly actions target negotiations, not the Alianza.

May Dry Spell Marked By 24 Year Low Rainfall

May was the driest month in 24 years with only 0.10 inch of moisture, 1.8 inches below normal. The 1945 May was the last time rainfall was this low. Year to date rainfall totals 2.16 inches, with 0.12 inch in the past seven weeks. Average May temperature 69.1, 1.1 above normal. Highs reached 100 on May 20 21 and 31, lows fell to 40 on May 1 and 9.

Sammy Lucero, a 9 year old, lost control of his motor scooter and ran into the Hondo River near the 900 block of East Second. He suffered a five inch head cut, was treated and released from a hospital.

Nine Roswell attorneys were named to a panel to represent indigent criminals as required by district court. Judge George L. High Court Rules Public Accommodation Reach Extended to Private Clubs

The Supreme Court, in a 7 to 1 decision, ruled that privately run recreation areas open to the public and offering interstate services cannot exclude Negroes, under the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Justice Brennan stated Lake Nixon Club near Little Rock is not a private club and must follow Title II rules. Justice Black dissented.
