At the 61st annual commencement of New Mexico Military Institute 232 cadets received diplomas as Hiram M. Dow spoke on faith courage and responsibility. Tragedy at NMMI Drowns Three Cadets During Ball
At New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell three cadets died after diving into a pool to test a dry ice mist. D. W. Vertrees P. G. Viohoupoulos and W. M. Woody Moore drowned while fellow cadet W. P. Shoemaker survived. The mishap halted the graduation ball but ceremonies would proceed. Carbon dioxide fumes from the dry ice were blamed as the cause.
