Brantley Dam funding awaits Nixon signature

The $45.6 million Brantley Dam project would gain $325 000 planning funds if President Nixon signs the atomic energy and public works appropriation bill passed by both houses. Carlsbad advocates say the dam protects against Pecos floods, with McMillan and Avalon Dams failing to store floodwaters. The plan, sponsored by Rep. Harold Runnels, would be built near McMillan upstream from Carlsbad, partly inundating the old dam. The bill also pockets New Mexico hundreds of millions in other Energy Commission and related programs, including geothermal and architecture projects in Los Alamos and regional flood controls. Senator Pete Domenici says New Mexico fared well.
