Senator Phelan of California warns that Japanese interests are gobbling up Mexican oil from U Sowners who feel unprotected by their government. He urges the U S to take a strong stand to defend American rights south of the Rio Grande. He also releases a February letter from Oil Director Requa urging government support for a major American petroleum company for world wide development.
Chicago July 30 Leaders among striking street car workers predicted the referendum on the wage compromise would approve sixty five to sixty cents hourly. Though not certain, the trend suggested a strike settlement by Friday as International Carmen's President William Mahon arrived to conduct the referendum.

New York July 30. Alleged destruction of army property and waste in France was charged in today's congressional war conduct sub committee. Witnesses testified over 100 airplanes in good condition were burned last May. Sergeant Fred Bailey led seventy five men to destroy planes as records show one plane used for only twenty minutes. Committeemen will investigate French trench land depreciation and tree destruction costs. General Pershing reportedly told Chief of Staff March the airplanes were burned under a set purpose and the sub committee will go to France to continue the inquiry.
New York July 30. A unique expedition bound for the jungles of Africa lands at Cape Town to document known and unknown animal life and human cultures. Led by Edmund Heller of the Smithsonian, with Henry C Raven and Homer L Shantz aboard, the party will use motion pictures as a key educational tool in a government program.

The New Mexico district of the Church of the Nazarene begins a district camp meeting in Roswell on Wednesday August 6 at the fair grounds. Campers are expected from across the district and visitors from other states. Services will be held under a big tent at 5th and Richardson, west of the Armory, near where the big barbecue occurred on July 10. Revival services will be conducted by the local ministers.
