Death of prizewinning author Louis Owens sparks questions
Louis Owens, Choctaw and Cherokee novelist and scholar, died at 53 from a gunshot described as a personal safety related wound. He was pronounced at University of New Mexico Hospital after being found near an airport. Owens wrote The Bone Game and Other Destinies, and won NEA Creative Writing Fellowship in 1989 and Wordcraft Circle award in 1998. It was reported he left a note asking to notify his wife Polly.
