The first Assistance League sponsored 747 jet flight to Hawaii returned home this afternoon. Passengers described sunny days and a fun experience in the sun along with memories to last a lifetime.
The Associated Press reports President Nixon signed a law granting antitrust exemption for joint operating agreements between newspapers in 29 cities. The measure allows future mergers of all but editorial operations if one paper is financially failing and must pass Justice Department approval.
Betty Gever 28 was rescued after 72 hours beneath a crash site on Capitan mountain east of Roswell. She suffered ankle and pelvic fractures and was flown to Roswell Medical Center by Army helicopter. Five others died including the pilot, with remains at Latarone Funeral Chapel.
Police faced rocks and bottles as about 190 black youths in New Bedford demanded the arrest of a rock thrower. In Bridgeport police used dogs and Mace to disperse about 400 people near a mostly black housing project after a tenant’s arrest. About 20 arrests were reported in scattered rock throwing in the South End. Two separate disturbances occurred Monday night and early today as officers tried to restore order.

Helen Bogers Reid former private secretary to Mrs Whitelaw Reid and wife of Ogden Reid died Monday at age 87. She became publisher and president of the New York Herald Tribune after Ogden Reid’s death in 1947 and led the defunct paper through its closing years.
Thousands of youths in Grant Park clashed with police after Sly and the Family Stone failed to perform. About 2,000 fought officers, smashed windows, and overturned cars during a three hour riot in 90 degree heat. 48 arrests and over 10 injuries, including 24 officers.
James Anderson, winner of a $10,000 city contract to paint a 12 by 80 foot mural at the Sunport, reports three pages of plans missing from his work table on July 8. He and insurer adjuster R G Burk say the loss delays the November deadline but Anderson will proceed after resolving plan issues amid city workers’ strike and earlier contest controversy.
