Chaves County Plans Amphitheatre and Public Works Complex

The Chaves County Commission unveiled plans to build an amphitheatre a public health center and a county maintenance building using federal funds totaling 892000 The amphitheatre could sit on New Mexico Military Institute Foundation land near Pearson Auditorium and would require the foundation to deed the land if funds are approved A 40 acre county land purchase at Atkinson Avenue and Brasher Road for the Road Department supports the project and the public health center would also be located there If the foundation refuses to deed the needed acres the plan may falter.

PSC and Union Oil plan $50 million geothermal plant

Public Service Co. of New Mexico and Union Oil Co. of California propose a $50 million geothermal powered plant to be located at Boca Grande Ranch near Valle Grande west of Los Alamos. They seek federal financing for the pilot project.

Geothermal project talks advance with federal funding sought

Representatives of two companies will meet Gov. Apodaca and state officials next Tuesday to brief them on a geothermal venture. ERDA would finance about 50 percent of the $25 million cost, with each firm contributing $12.5 million. The plan, linked to Union Oil and PNM, envisions the first hot water geothermal plant of its kind in the US.

Santa Barbara brush fire destroys homes and disrupts city

A blaze driven by gusty winds from the Santa Ynez Mountains destroyed up to 200 homes and injured at least 17 in Santa Barbara. The fire began Tuesday evening in the Los Padres National Forest, fueled by chaparral and eucalyptus, and forced evacuations as responders fought narrow winding streets and looting reports amid a power outage.
