Letters From Roosevelt Delivered In Roswell

Roswell postmaster Mrs. W H McCullough announced that Roosevelt letters under the re employment plan have been delivered to Roswell employers. A survey showed most stores delaying the plan until August first while some, like J C Penney, began immediate hour reductions for workers.

Kidnapper gets death sentence in Kansas City

Walter McGee the confessed leader of the gang that abducted Miss Mary McElroy daughter of city manager H F McElroy and collected 30000 in ransom was given the death penalty by a criminal court jury. The sentence will be formally imposed by Judge Allert C Southern. This case marks a landmark in the nation’s crusade against kidnapers and the unusual fate of an unharmed victim.

County Net Valuation Climbs After 25 Percent Reduction

The Chaves county tax roll shows a total net valuation of 10,773,260 after a 25 percent reduction on real property values. Officials expect a further 12 percent blanket increase to meet budget needs, though livestock valuations may be exempt. Puryear May Be Named U S Senator

Edgar Puryear of Roswell, secretary to Sen. Bronson Cutting, could fill the unexpired Bratton term. Roswell Legion calls for National Commander removal

The Charles M. de Bremont Post No. 28 of the American Legion in Roswell passed a resolution urging the immediate removal of National Commander Louis A. Johnson. The group also urged the New Mexico Department to act and named Jesse Dustin as delegation chairman for the Tucumcari convention August 4 to 5.

The New Mexico Newspaper Association will hold a two day mid summer meeting in Raton July 27 28 to discuss the national recovery act. Orville Ricketts secretary and Farmington Times Hustler editor says the group has avoided firm NRA comments until a consensus forms. Three Martinsville Boys Killed Sleeping On Road

Martinsville Virginia July 27 AP James Hammond Howard Hammond and Arch Purdy aged 12 to 15 were killed when an unknown driver ran over four boys resting on the Martinsville Stuart highway. Archer Dillon was severely injured and memories of the crash were not recovered. The victims lived near Martinsville and were walking home from Stuart when they stopped to rest. A man named Tatum found the scene after sunrise. Police found no clue to the driver's identity.

Roswell brewer named regional N R A supervisor

J E Johns owner of Coca Cola Bottling Company of Roswell has been appointed regional supervisor for New Mexico and Arizona under the National Industrial Recovery Act as it affects the beverage industry. He is one of 13 regional supervisors nationwide and will attend a meeting in Ogden Utah.

Gun Slaying Probes Deepen Chicago Gun War

Chicago police hunt three gunmen who killed Willie Carr as he ran along Elson Avenue. Carr, a rumored rum runner and hijacker, is linked to other gang violence amid a push by Chief Justice Prystalski to mobilize jurists in a price of war on gunmen. Concurrently a grand jury plans to indict 24 individuals on conspiracy charges in a three month rackets probe, with 23 counts including bombing and extortion.

AP reports leading New York chain stores hike price by one cent per package on major brands. Effective next Monday in the city the price becomes 12 cents per pack or two packs for 23 cents.

New Mexico Receives 5.7 Million Highway Grant

The Washington public roads bureau approved a 5.7 million dollar federal road fund allotment to New Mexico under the industrial recovery act. The state highway commission will review projects at an open meeting in Santa Fe with districts in Denver to approve. Half the funds go to federal aid roads, a quarter to secondary roads, and a quarter to municipalities. counties will present road programs in 30 minute sessions.

The state corporate commission listed one withdrawal and one cancellation alongside a new incorporation. Tidal Oil Co of Tulsa withdrew from the state. Santa Fe Transportation Co had its right to do business canceled for failing to file annual reports. Tenine Realty Co of New York was incorporated for 5060, with local agent Jose D. JAPAN COMMANDER IN MANCHURIA DIES

Field Marshal Nobuyoshi Muto, Japanese supreme official in Manchuria, died in Changchun at 63 after a sudden jaundice attack. Tokyo named General Takashi Hishikari, wartime council member, as his successor to avert instability during the Manchukuo interregnum. Muto returned to Changchun July 22 after field duties and died 24 hours after illness was realized. He was posthumously titled a baron.
