At Lincoln Park Zoo Oklahoma City veterinarians from Oklahoma State University performed exploratory surgery on 14 foot giraffe Roger to correct an intestinal twist that may have caused illness. His mate Freida paced anxiously in the adjacent pen as doctors worked.
Chaves County ASC approves 17 emergency drought feed applications and sends one to Albuquerque for review. Applicants must show need with a financial statement and certify feed use to sustain their foundation herd through September 20.
Louis G. West a 26 year old from 2701 North Main Street sustained chest injuries neck and chin lacerations and a bruised knee in a collision between his 1952 Nash sedan and a Santa Fe diesel locomotive at North Garden and the railroad. West employed by Seven Up Bottlers Inc. suffered non life threatening injuries as responders found no fire at the scene. locomotive engineer identified by initials B Karstetter.
Forty Chaves County 4-H members and leaders will depart Monday for a four day camp at Scott Able 4-H Camp in the Sacramento Mountains. 4-H'ers from Lincoln DeBaca and Otero Counties join the group. The camp features first aid courses and crafts including rope halter making by Ralph Dunlap and native stone jewelry by Jewell Middleton. Riflery is supervised by Bob Rankin and outdoor games by Ted Peabody with evening dances planned by the campers.

The 1957 winter wheat crop in Kansas was delayed by unseasonal rains during harvest. Experts say it will likely meet standards, but the harvest pace is uneven and final quantity and quality remain hard to estimate, with Kansas likely to suffer the largest production dent among the four major producing states.

The New Mexico Highway Commission opened bids on seven road projects valued between four and five million dollars amid a 2-2 deadlock over seating Charles Williams as district three commissioner. Gov. Mechem supports Williams though no seating is achieved. Alamogordo’s McKinley vows to stand by the choice as federal funds and the road program hang in the balance. Frank J. Kaufmann manager of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce has been named to the executive operating council for the 1958 Southwestern Chamber of Commerce Institute. The announcement came at the closing session of the 1957 Institute in Dallas Texas. He has served as vice president of the organization and as chairman of the student affairs committee. The council will set policy curriculum and faculty for next year’s Institute.
City officials reported a break in last night at the municipal airport. A transient aircraft office was entered and a typewriter and a Sunbeam Shavemaster razor were stolen. City Manager C M Woodbury notified police.
