Artesia Road Cash Set Aside for Potential Widening

Eddy County officials consider starting Artesia urban road work this year and set aside a $20 000 reserve to buy rights of way. State engineers discussed the possibility with Commission Chairman E O Spurlin in Santa Fe before a special Artesia meeting. The action follows a sequence of money decisions tied to widening First Street into a four lane divided highway.

State Policeman Melvin McGuires Injured in Wreck

State Policeman Melvin McGuire and three others were injured when a Portales produce truck rammed a roadblock on U S 66 four miles east of Budville. McGuire was reported in satisfactory condition at Bataan Hospital. Also injured were Mrs. Bud Rice and two Highway Department workers Cruz Montano and Nabor Gonzales. Truck driver Claude Shaw of Lovington faced reckless driving charges.

Pleads Guilty To DWI Before Justice Of The Peace

John D. Parker, 22, of Mount Airey North Carolina pleaded guilty today to a drunk driving charge before Justice of the Peace R Perry Bean. He was fined 100 dollars and 5 dollars costs. Bond denial or setting not specified for Adolph Mendoza who pleaded innocent to car theft with bond set at 1500 dollars.

Runoff Likely In Texas Governor Race As Shivers Leads

A Democratic primary runoff appears likely in Texas for governor with Allan Shivers 49.31 percent and Ralph Yarborough 47.96 percent as 60,000 to 980,000 votes remain. A second Democratic primary is set for Aug. 28 as two minor candidates together push toward a runoff.

Lab to Report On Death of Frank Koprian

Post mortem specimens from Frank J. Koprian 61 died Saturday and were taken to Albuquerque for exam. District Attorney Pat Hanagan said Chief Tommy Thompson planned to ship the samples, with an inquest likely in 10 days or two weeks. Koprian had faced murder charges in Marilyn Seig abortion death and was released on $5,000 bond with his wife also charged.

Governor Mechem Headlining Two Southern New Mexico Events

Crowd Packed District Court Hears Defaults

A corridor capacity crowd of about 75 filled the district court today with many having business in the court. An early forenoon score filled the courtroom as out of town lawyers including Jerry Lessee and D D Ar cher of Artesia attended along with local Pat Hanagan district attorney and his assistant Jack Love. The district attorney had said most cases were defaults.
