Highway agency purge stirs New Mexico political tempests

In Santa Fe on July 25 AP reports four Highway Department employees were dismissed in a move seen as a Democratic party effort to purge Progressives from state payrolls. Frank Butt, highway chairman, praised the action as removing leanings toward Gov. Hockenhull allies, while others note lingering jockeying among Chavez, Hatch, Bursum, and local party leaders.

State Tax Levy Likely Six Mills Beall Says

Byron Q Beall state chief tax commissioner told the state finance board that with an estimated 292 000 000 valuation sufficient revenue could be raised to meet the year s appropriations if 90 per cent of taxes are collected The six mill levy includes one mill for interest and sinking fund not in the 20 mill limit The remaining five mills would cover all school funds Last year an extra levy was needed for schools The board heard requests for money from various divisions including the Highway Commission which asked to dispose of the remaining 625 000 of a two million highway debenture issue authorized in 1933 Continued on page Three

Stockyards in Chicago Open Today Amid Strike Tensions

Chicago July 25 AP The Chicago union stock yards reopened under an agreement to allow humane slaughter of stock on hand. About 70 000 cattle owned by the federal government for relief, 5 000 hogs, and a few sheep were present while 65 000 to 70 000 cattle remained with federal owners. Striking handlers warned of a possible walkout and nonunion crews fed cattle as the temperature hit a record 105. Government purchases were briefly halted to ease pressure as 14 600 cattle awaited rerouting or slaughter.

J R Thomas Chaves county agricultural agent received a telegram from H L Kent director of the government's drought relief cattle paying in New Mexico ordering the postponement of the purchase of cattle for shipment until further instructions The halt is believed due to the Chicago stockyards strike Existing purchases will be shipped but no new applications will be accepted until resumed Slaughtering of condemned cattle continues 500 head planned for Mescalero Indian Agency food supplies and arrangements for this deal were made by Fields Thompson FERA representative

A Duncan Ariz cattleman John Scott 35 was killed and Ted Kennedy of Lordsburg seriously injured when their car crashed near Duncan. Three Spanish American Boys Sent to Reform School

Marihuana Fueled Man Fights Police Near Hardware Store

Roberto Fuentes, alleged by authorities to be under marijuana influence, fought Officer Jack Edwards Deputy Sheriff Sam McCue and Constable Perry Fosean before his arrest near the Mabie Lowrey Hardware Store late yesterday. Fuentes is charged with shoplifting and struck McCue in the throat, causing partial voice loss.
