Roswell Wins 180000 State Match for Truck Bypass

Roswell Mayor Jerry N. Smith said the State Highway Commission will match 180000 for the Atkinson Street bypass reconstruction from Fifth Street to College Avenue. Dams urged to curb Artesia flood threat in New Mexico

Artesia Mayor Ernest Thompson told a Senate subcommittee funding for the Draw-Tumbleweed watershed project is needed to protect the city from recurring floods. Former mayor T E Vandiver and local leaders cited past flood damage dating back to 1941 and shown photos from 1954 and 1964. They argue the plan, a chain of small dams across the draw, should be extended westward beyond city limits to be adequate.

Connie Hopper becomes Roswell City Police Department’s first woman traffic officer assigned to a motorcycle. She moved from a meter maid role to traffic duty, later riding a Honda 500 and issuing citations while directing traffic.
