Merciless heat grips nearly all of United States
A sweeping heat wave bakes the nation with 95 heat index forecasts and up to 100 in about 30 states. The cool of night offers little relief as a high pressure ridge and rising Gulf waters push temperatures higher toward the weekend. Weather experts note the extreme warmth may persist into next month and beyond.
