In Athens a massive funeral procession for a left wing student killed in a political riot drew over 100000 demonstrators. Heavily armed riot police and troops were deployed with orders to suppress any violence.
Washington leaders say President Johnson remains out of the battle over a constitutional amendment on legislative reapportionment after a White House conference. In New Mexico, the Welfare Board plans to operate Fort Bayard Veterans Administration Hospital for geriatrics if the state gains control. Winston L. Manire 45 of Carlsbad pleaded innocent to armed robbery of the Northgate branch of Carlsbad National Bank taking 20413 dollars. He was arraigned, held on 20000 bond, and police said the loot was found in a paper bag in his car.
The Roswell Downtown Merchants Association will offer free parking in downtown every Saturday from August 7 through the last Saturday in December. Merchants will provide meters for a $175 daily fee, with banners and a Main Street crossbar sign to promote the program. Bulletin from Williamsport Pennsylvania reports an airliner crash near the Williamsport Lycoming Airport. Early word states the plane, possibly Allegheny Airlines, carried 35 people and went down around 2 30 p.m. EST, about five miles from Mountoursville and ten miles from the airport.
An undetermined explosion and fire ripped through the crew quarters of the Irish Sycamore, a Dublin-based 449-foot freighter tied up in New Orleans. Four Irish seamen were killed and a fifth is missing as the blaze in the hold and superstructure broke out before dawn and was controlled after daylight.
