Dickens Homecoming planned in Dickens County on Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. A basket lunch will be served at 1 pm with neighbors invited. Roswell area residents attend. LaHondo Reavanue Club reports strong June turnout, 92 percent.
Washington AP reports Elet OL Richardson as new secretary of health education and welfare faces swift bipartisan pushback from Sen Russell Long over revised welfare legislation. Long calls the plan a carse bill and criticizes minimum wage and work incentives.
Sen Clifford Manson of West Virginia faces criticism as lawmakers question the administration’s Social Security and Medicare proposals. Senator Richardson presents a 31 page statement while Richardsson defends the administration. Senator Talmadge calls the plan an expansion of welfare and seeks work incentives through tax credits for hiring welfare recipients, a central House welfare critique echoed by both parties.

Washington Nixon says he will visit Mexico in early September for his 30th wedding anniversary ceremony and plans to announce a destination later.
Lansing police search a wooded area near the state capital for clues in the death of Laurie Musting a 16 year old kidnapped from a gift shop. Her body was found after a 12 day statewide search. The girl was taken at gunpoint after a shop robbery. A reward is offered and FBI involvement yielded no usable leads.
President Nixon outlined support for Hanoi Paris peace discussions while ruling out a coalition government in Saigon. He stressed no major disagreements with Thieu, deflecting calls for forced South public-school integration, and touched on defense and budget plans amid looming 1972 political pressures.
Government data show consumer prices rose four tenths of one percent in June, easing the worst inflation in 20 years. Food housing clothing and other items stayed about six percent higher than a year ago, while average weekly pay rose to 120.05 dollars for about 45 million workers, yet purchasing power remained below year-ago levels for the 15th straight month. The CPI reached 135.2 indicating 13.52 dollars in typical family purchases per 10 dollars of 1957 59 basis. The June rise matched May’s increase after slower gains in earlier months.
