Roosevelt urges extension of army service for selectees

President Roosevelt urged Congress to extend the one year term of active service for selectees, national guardsmen, and reservists. He warned of grave national risk and army disintegration if not approved, saying the international situation remains far more grave than a year ago and that the army must stay at full strength and ready. The president broadcast his message by transcribing it on records to reach the nation, stressing the need to train additional Americans and maintain officer personnel.

Russians And Germans Claiming To Be Successful

A German military spokesman says a big destructive battle is underway east of the Stalin line near Smolensk. Berlin claims an entire Soviet division was annihilated at Mogilev on the Dnieper, while Moscow dispatches insist Smolensk remains in Red Army hands. Britain vows the RAF will strike Germany hard in the coming months as German weather hampers advances.

Lew Fields of Weber Fields Dies in Beverly Hills

Lew Fields, 74, half of the Weber and Fields vaudeville team, died after illness. Joe Weber attended the funeral, calling Fields his “right arm.” The duo had starred together in girl-shows with many noted stage figures such as Lillian Russell, David Warfield, DeWolf Hopper, Fay Templeton and Willie Collier.

London July 21 A British Broadcasting Company executive said Britain's campaign to raise an underground army against Germany is the first pitched propaganda battle of the war and that the British are winning it. N F Newsome European news editor spoke of future leadership experiments to test occupied peoples willingness to accept London. He warned Germans there will be other efforts until the underground army can be mobilized for the final offensive.

Bolivian Nazi plot tale shocks La Paz arrests

Bolivian authorities arrested several prominent figures including former finance minister Victor Paz Estenssoro amid claims of a Nazi plot. Ernst Wendler the German minister was ordered expelled. President Penaranda said he possessed documents linking officials to meddling in domestic affairs. The state of siege remained in effect.

Lambert Sought by FBI in Texas and New Mexico

SAN JOSE Calif July 21 The FBI asked detention of Roy Lambert 38 alias Enouch Skeen arrested on a drunk charge as a suspect in kidnapings in Texas and New Mexico Sheriff William Emig said the FBI notified him by telegram Lambert gave Firebaugh Calif as his address when arrested last week and he was sentenced to 15 days in jail.

City Attorneys Schedule Aug 4 Rehearing on Paying Liens

City attorney Ross L. Malone Jr will join with Carlsbad Albuquerque and Santa Fe in presenting oral arguments before the state supreme court in the rehearing of a case ruling paying liens are barred after four years. A rehearing motion by city attorneys from eleven New Mexico towns was granted and arguments set for August 4. Roswell holds 176000 in outstanding paying bonds affected.

Bacchus Transferred to Albuquerque Station of Continental Line

Bud Bacchus, manager of the Roswell station of Continental Airlines, has been temporarily transferred to the Albuquerque station. Olan Wooldridge will act as manager here during his absence. Wooldridge had been ordered to Carlsbad, but the order was revoked when Bacchus was called to Albuquerque.

Public Service Commission Opens with Three Day Hearing

The New Mexico Public Service Commission met for the first time and called a three day open hearing for September 15 16 and 17 to discuss the utilities control act. Utilities and the public were invited to attend as the panel urged frank views on rate making and related issues.

Auto Accident Damages Chevrolet Coach in North Sea Crash

A Chevrolet coach driven by Lula Guss was badly damaged in an afternoon collision on North Sea, south of Summit. A truck backing from a driveway by Kenneth James collided with the car. No injuries were reported.

Dam for Power And Flood Control On The Rio Grande

Santa Fe New Mexico July 21 survey toward possible construction of a power and flood control dam across the Rio Grande in White Rock Canyon to supply hydro electric power to Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The survey, requested by the interstate streams commission, will be conducted by the geological survey conservation division with cooperation of the state engineer. W C G Senkpiel Denver engineer in charge and R N Doolittle will lead the field party. The site appears suitable, with negligible condemnation cost and a narrow canyon dam that would halt high pressure water. The canyon runs from Cochiti to the Otowi bridge over wasteland with no highways or railroads. Continued on page Hight.

Two Brutal Murders Of 2 Young Girls

Salem police probe two killings involving 15 year old Constance Shipp of Reading and 19 year old Frances Cochran of Lynn. A Reading boy, Ray mond Woodward Jr., was held without bail in Shipp’s murder as officers pursue leads in Cochran case found in Salem woodland. Washington July 21 Sumner Welles acting secretary of state said the United States had information Germany planned new aggression against remaining independent European nations. He did not detail requests but speculation pointed to Spain and Portugal. He also said the United States would fully support Bolivia if an international incident arose from an alleged Nazi coup and the expulsion of the German minister.

Pirates 8 Dodgers 3 in NL race tightens lead

Pirates beat Dodgers 8 to 3 in Brooklyn. Elbie Fletcher and Vincent DiMaggio homered to pace Pittsburgh’s offense, giving them eight runs on 11 hits while Brooklyn managed three on 10.
