Kansas City Mo July 20 The City National Bank failed to open its doors today. It held the paper of C J Devlin of Topeka for 100000 and the failure follows the closing of the First National Bank of Topeka of which Devlin was principal stockholder. The bank had capital 300000 and deposits nearly 1500000. It was closed by bank examiner Beeye Amis under instruction from the Comptroller of the Currency. The Comptroller reportedly told officers they must take up 280000 of bad paper immediately or not be allowed to open. A bankers committee found affairs risky and would not extend aid. Deposits fell about 600000 in sixty days.
Judge Wm. H. Pope is installing the new system for selecting jurors in Federal and Territorial district court. He has conducted special terms at Portales and Carls.
Rochester hosts the New York State Optical Society annual convention with a business meeting scientific papers and a banquet at the Rochester club. Prof. J F Stilwell arrived from El Paso after serving as Phoenix public schools superintendent and summer Normal instructor in Natchitoches. He plans to visit his mother in South Carolina before September.
