Allied and Communist delegates met 39 minutes at Panmunjom then adjourned amid fears South Korea may honor a limited armistice. Peiping radio accused the United States and South Korea, while Red forces launched a major assault on the East Central Front.
U S congressman Franklin D Roosevelt Jr. stopped briefly in London en route to the African Gold Coast and South Africa on a personal observation tour.

A 21 year old Texas Western College football player Jack Burris was crushed to death when his Safeway Stores truck left U S 54 three miles south of Newman and overturned several times. Burris was an outstanding halfback at Texas Western.
First shipments of emergency grain arrived in New Mexico to aid drought stricken farmers and ranchers. 203 carloads reached Tucumcari and Wagon Mound from New Orleans and Dallas as Sen. Chavez urged adding five counties to the disaster category.
An F86F Sabrejet from Clovis air base crashed four miles west of Clovis after takeoff. Lt. Earl L. Trimble Jr. parachuted to safety before the jet burned in a field east of the base. Cause of engine failure remains undetermined.
U S envoy Walter S Robertson left Tokyo by plane to report to President Eisenhower on his 16 days of secret talks with President Syngman Rhee. He carried a pledge by Rhee to abide by an armistice if possible at Panmunjom and urged no misrepresentation of the discussions.
Examinations for real estate licenses required in New Mexico will be given at Mabry Hall of the State Capitol in Santa Fe on August 21. The announcement came from Stanley H. Mathis secretary and board member of the New Mexico Realtors Board.
President Eisenhower signed a multi million dollar emergency relief bill for drought districts in the southwest. He acted 24 hours after Congress completed action and pledged rapid mobilization of federal assets to aid farmers and ranchers whose lands are parched.
Thirteen horned toads arrived from Texas to replace Elmer at the Davis School in Newton nearby. Elmer died this spring after being shipped from Albuquerque last year. The toads were delivered by a American Airlines plane as a gift from the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce.
The Oil Conservation Commission denied a proposal to set 80 acre spacing below 10600 feet. Deep pools would hold one well per 80 acres until five wells or 18 months pass, then operators must prove need or revert to 40 acre spacing. Richard Spurrier noted applicants can still seek 80 acre spacing after the first well.
The freighter Jacob Luckenbach sank minutes after a morning collision in dense fog 18 miles southwest of the Golden Gate. All crew members were rescued, Coast Guard reports. The Luckenbach was outbound to the Far East from the Oakland Army Depot and collided with the Hawaiian Pilot, inbound from Hawaii.
Washington report describes the Armed Forces Medical Museum revealing pieces from the backbones of John Wilkes Booth and James A. Garfield along with skull fragments. The museum, part of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, houses Civil War era wounds and other human remains attracting about 140 000 visitors yearly.

He cited progress toward an agreement with South Korea's Syngman Rhee and noted optimism among lawmakers about possible post armistice peace in Asia. Honolulu reports rescuers pulled burned and mutilated bodies from shark infested waters after a Transocean Airlines DC6B crash. Fifty eight aboard include 50 passengers with nine children and eight crew. Barrett recovered 11 bodies, two children, sighted three more. raft count ended with an empty raft. Little hope for survivors after five rafts were found. The airliner was en route from Guam to Oakland when it vanished. The Sea Frontier will continue air searches for 24 hours, with multiple planes on duty.
Tens of thousands of Chinese forces attacked a 20 mile front east of Kumsong to the Pukhan River, driving some ground and pinning Allied defenses. Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor said the defense is taking heavy casualties while regrouping, with four Chinese divisions leading the assault and additional reserves funneling in amid bad weather.
Hundreds of East Berliners crossed into West Berlin during a food relief sale in Kruezberg. The market offered donated stocks at about one sixth of normal price, with operations resumed next day including potatoes. Mayor Willy Kressman announced the plan to continue the relief run as milk and fruit sold out quickly.
