28 Feet of Garden Hose Vanishes in Ground

In Hutchinson Kansas Claude Key reports 28 feet of his 50 foot garden hose vanished into the ground. He and his children found the hose immovable with its end entering hard sandy soil. Crowds gathered, tugging at the hose as observers speculated on the mystery. Mrs. Key voiced nerves and concern over caring for six children.

Full Scale Evacuation Planned at Walker AFB for Operation Alert

Walker AFB will join nationwide civil defense drill Operation Alert beginning July 20, 1956, with a full scale evacuation of the base included. Officials expect this year to surpass last year when over 2,000 people were evacuated in under an hour.
