Pedestrians in New Mexico Face High Fatality Risk
A national study by the Surface Transportation Policy Project shows walking is far more deadly than driving and 124 pedestrians died in New Mexico from 1997 to 1998, 14 percent of traffic fatalities. Albuquerque tops the statewide danger list with Las Cruces and Santa Fe close behind. Roswell recorded 21 pedestrian incidents, 19 injuries and two deaths, while bicyclist crashes numbered 12 with no fatalities. The report criticizes highway design and low crosswalk access, noting NM spends 78 cents per person on pedestrian projects, far below other benchmarks.
