Grass fire rekindled near Roswell and local race tensions
Fire crews from Berrendo East Grand Plains and the Bureau of Land Management extinguished a rekindled grass fire at 9 am at a site 13 miles southwest of Roswell on the Jack Patterson ranch. The earlier fire burned 60 acres of rangeland and damaged a Berrendo fire truck valued at $10,000.

Gap Found In White House Tapes During Watergate Hearings
Assistant special Watergate prosecutor Richard Ben Veniste reported a nineteen minute gap on one tape and a tape torn by White House secretaries during transcription. A court record of the hearing was sent to the Supreme Court amid disputes over access to and use of subpoenaed tapes.

Dexter man bound over on voluntary manslaughter charge
Fabian Amaro, 39, of Route 1 Dexter, was bound over in Fifth Judicial District Court after a preliminary hearing before Magistrate Judge Kent Shannon on the voluntary manslaughter charge connected to the June 30 shooting death of Johnny Davidson Jr., 30, of Hagerman. Witnesses described the night’s events including a confrontation after a bar visit and a pickup truck involved in the incident. the gun was later found in a white Dodge station wagon in a barn on the Wayne Wagner farm. Prosecutor was Dist. Atty. J. Daten Om as Roswell. defense for Amaro and his brother Leopoldo Amaro.
