In El Paso on July 11 AP reports a giant tarantula defeated a Black Widow spider in an all night battle. The Widow attempted to bind the tarantla but failed. Two hundred hatchling Widows were left without a mother. Dean Anton Berkman notes Widow spiders often kill tarantulas and lizards.
Laura Ingalls departed Floyd Bennett airport in a low wing monoplane bound for Burbank to attempt the first east to west nonstop women’s transcontinental flight. The AP report notes Amelia Earhart’s west to east record at 7:07:30 and cites prevailing winds favoring east to west attempts.
London July 11 AP Sir Samuel Hoare British foreign secretary decried Italy's reasons for waging war on Ethiopia and pledged continued peace efforts while Britain reportedly held up export licenses for arms to Ethiopia. He noted wild Italian press statements and urged peaceful settlement to avoid broader conflict. Then Gallup New Mexico sought clues to a burned Navajo skeleton near the reservation, with officials considering Everet Ruess as a possibility and preparing to search the pit and area for identifying clues.
Santa Monica columnist Walt Oeere notes the resurfacing of discussions about The Budget in newspapers. He recalls Budget as a once useful figure now revived in local chatter, humorously predicting balancing him will be tough while acknowledging newer readers may not recognize the name.
In Tacoma Washington July 11 AP the government nears end of its case in the Margaret Thulin Waley kidnapping conspiracy trial after nine year old George Weyerhaeuser testified and authorities anticipate resting the case. Harmon Waley had pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and was to be moved from McNeil Island federal prison for sentencing.
Representative Dempsey reports after a two weeks trip home that conditions in New Mexico are fine and the administration has not lost ground. He says the work relief program is making a favorable impression on the people there.
Alamogordo New Mexico July 11 AP Robert L Tierney Las Cruces charged with manslaughter and driving while intoxicated and three companions charged with accompanying a drunken driver bound over on bond to trial January term of district court after a prelinary hearing. Two men were killed and another fatally injured in a car collision five miles north of Alamogordo involving Tierney and occupants John L Plese Gallup RG Ponsford El Paso Texas and Dorr M Miller Mesilla Park plus a Marcia New Mexico workers'.
Farm bureau groups across eleven western states adopted a set of resolutions urging Roosevelt administration farm policies generic to land use and inland water rates. They call for permanent public works projects without yearly caps, loan principles for farm credit, weed control funds, and passage of the Warren potato bill with wool and mohair included in AAA marketing provisions.
Census figures show US birth rate at 17.1 per thousand in 1934, up from 16.6 in 1933. Total live births reached 2,158,919. New Mexico led with 27.9 births per thousand, while California recorded the lowest at 12.7.
President Roosevelt met with Senate Territories Committee Chairman Tydings and Secretary Ickes to discuss the Senate investigation of Gov. Paul M. Pearson. The White House session followed public charges between Ickes and the committee, as leaders sought to quell the Virgin Islands controversy.
Albuquerque July 11 AP A land use committee of the state planning board will meet July 16 to discuss public domain disposal and other government lands. Topics include the Navajo boundary extension grazing district rules wildlife refuges and plans for Gabaldon rant north of Santa Fe and related subjects. National League results include New York losing 4 to 2 at Pittsburgh with Parmelee and Man cuso among the batters. Brooklyn 4 Cincinnati 5 in a 12 inning affair as Derringer and Lombardi handled the St. Louis battery. Boston and Chicago split a 2 4 game with strong hitting while Philadelphia beat St Louis 1 to 0 and Walters and Wilson worked the mound for the win.
Detroit and Washington open with a rough 120 100 line as Rowe Cochrane Hadley Bolton provide support. St Louis defeats Philadelphia 7 3 in the first game with strong batting by Thomas VanAtta Walkup Andrews Hemsley Heath Wilshere Berry. Second game sees Cain Knott Hem sley Mahaffey Benton Caster Richards in a 8 3 St Louis win over Philadelphia. Cleveland edges New York 8 1 as Harder L Brown Pytlak Allen Jorgens pace the effort. Chicago falls to Boston 4 3 with Whitehead Sewell Grove Ferrell combining. Chicago 4 0 3 2 0 1 Peston 0 0 9 0 0 1 Batteries listed.
War Department plans extensive improvements at Lordsburg airdrome New Mexico awaiting action on a 110000 public works allotment. 75 000 would go to paved aprons and runways while 35000 funds hangars. Also seeking 36500 from works relief for Fort Wingate magazine repairs.
Roswell businessmen plan a second summer good will trip on July 17 visiting Picacho, Tinnie, Hondo, Lincoln, Ft. Stanton, Capitan, Carrizozo and Ruicoso. The school band will perform in each town and badges with names will be issued. Luncheon en route at Capitan. Weather expected milder than Lea county trip through the mountains.

The United States Golf Association expands the national amateur championship at Leveland Country Club to Sept 9 with 29 qualifying districts, up from 18. Exempt foreign titleholders join entrants. new districts include Schenectady N Y Madison Wis Charlotte N C Little Rock Ark and New Orleans Aug 20 is set for most qualifiers Aug 13 for Denver Los Angeles and San Francisco. entry closes Aug 10 for most and Aug 24 for some.
Denver reports US Department of Agriculture monthly assessment shows western ranges at 88 percent of normal across 17 western states, improving from 66 percent a year ago. Cattle and calves at 85 percent, sheep and lambs at 90 percent, with moisture generally good but dry areas in Montana Oregon and New Mexico.
Attorney General Cummings faced sharp remarks as committee members urged Senate approval of a bill to close gaps from the supreme court gold clause decision. Critics alleged repudiation and broken promises, naming Senators Glass and McAdoo. Port of Newark warned the plan would damage credit, while Fort argued it gives the executive unchecked power over bond interpretation.
