The Old Timers spelling bee at the Southern M. E. church, hosted by the Woman's Club, drew a nice sum for the Carnegie Library fund. Local seniors entertained with songs and duets, the audience applauded “Dixie” and other numbers, and the spelling match concluded with Mr. Snyder winning the Peacock medal after a tense finish.
Salt Lake on July 12 J T Laverty head of the State Federation of Labor reports a dispatch from Silver Bow Trades and Labor Assembly of Butte urging every central labor body in the United States to set Sunday August 5 for a united direct demand on Caldwell Idaho judge Frank J Smith.
The text demands an immediate trial or bail for Chas. H. Moyer Wm. D. Haywood and George A. Pettibone for the murder of former Governor Frank Steunenberg. It urges every labor body in the United States to adopt resolutions addressed to Judge Smith.
A general strike of freight handlers in Buffalo has been declared to demand 17 to 20 cents an hour increases. Disputes began at the New York Central freight house over a promise to raise pay after July first, and the dock was shut as clashes with police occurred among strikers today.

In New Haven on July 11 President F S Luther of Trinity College Hartford asserted the American boy has a right to learn a trade in school rather than under labor unions that seek to restrict his progress during the American Institute of Instruction convention.
Sevastopol reports an attempted killing of Vice Admiral Chonknin at one o clock in the afternoon. He was wounded and taken to a hospital. Earlier on February 9 an attack by a woman at his door failed. In London a separate note says three students fired on a paymaster and two guards, stealing $12,000.
Chicago July 12 Judge Landis in the U S District Court fined the Chicago and Alton railroad 20000 on each of two counts for illegal rebates at Kansas City. Former officials John Fairborn and Fred A Wann face 5000 on two counts, or 10000 total each. No extenuating circumstances found. appeals filed.
Secretary Wilson said Chicago packers are making every effort to improve plant sanitation and that revised regulations take effect August 1. He noted inspectors from multiple cities have reported overall improving conditions and will not inspect any facility unless sanitary standards are perfect.

Judge Emmett Patton traveled to Hagerman this afternoon to join his family for a vacation in the White Mountains. The trip will last until August 1. Machinist J. Q. Cummins also went to Hagerman today on business at the Cummins and Shearman well camp.
E. W. Harrison came back this afternoon from Hereford where he had been since last Saturday on business.
Jamestown New York July 12 Investigation of alleged Interstate Commerce law violations by Standard Oil and the Pennsylvania Railroad opened before Judge Hazen and a jury. Commissioner Garfield found the company saved about 115000 dollars in 1904 through rebates on oil shipments from the refinery.
