West fires gain ground as weather cools across the West
Fire crews across California Colorado Wyoming Montana Utah and Utah report progress against large wildfires amid improving conditions. In California 1000 firefighters battled a 2 square mile blaze near Redding 60 percent contained with damage to five homes. Colorado's largest fire reached 98 percent containment with evacuations lifted for 126 households near Colorado Springs. In Wyoming and Montana damp, windy lull aided containment on multiple fires including Arapaho Oil Creek Squirrel Creek and Ash Creek while Medicine Bow and Laramie Peak fires showed progress.

PED investigates former Goddard teacher over alleged sexual misconduct
New Mexico Public Education Department opened a disciplinary case against Lawrence David Lawrence, a former Goddard High School teacher and coach, after allegations of sexual misconduct. A November 2011 notice cites five counts of ethics violations, seeking possible suspension or revocation of his teaching license on grounds of moral turpitude and incompetency.

Golden eaglet survives Utah wildfire in nest site
A 70 day old golden eagle named Phoenix survived the Damp Fire near Saratoga Springs. The chick endured burns on talons beak head and wings and is being treated at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah in Ogden. State and federal agencies approved care with hopes for a wild release next year.
