Ronald Castleberry of Artesia won the fourth annual Roswell Soap Box Derby ahead of Roswell’s Class B champion David Lee Smith. Castleberry, sponsored by Jack's Radiator Shop, aimed for Akron in August as crowds of 3 000 watched 27 heats under clear skies.

State Records Two Drownings On Holiday

Four deaths marred the Fourth of July in New Mexico. Drownings claimed Luis Hernandez 9 of El Paso and Rosina Moya 12 of Santa Fe while 4 year old Frank Martinez of Santa Fe was found unharmed after an all night search. An unidentified pedestrian killed in a hit and run near State Road 58 and U S 64 Cimarron. Tony Sarracino 20 of Grants died when brakes failed and his car left the road. Lilly Marquez 17 and two younger sisters were injured in Grants. State Police report the 183rd death this year.

At 10 a.m. today an apparent attempt to pay the $2,000 ransom in the Peter Weinberger kidnapping failed to yield immediate results. Morris Weinberger, the boy’s father, placed a brown envelope at a tree near their Westbury home and then reentered the house as reporters were cleared from the scene.

Train hits crowd at Fourth of July display in Illinois

A Milwaukee Road passenger train struck spectators watching a fireworks show near Fox Lake Illinois. Three people died and five were injured as about 80 to 100 people lined the track and a trestle while 500 others watched from a fenced field. Names of victims include Lillian Pavelchik 33 and her son Gary 7 of Round Lake and Carl Strand 42 of Waukonda.
