Joe Chumley Wins Soap Box Derby in Missouri Street Race

Joe Chumley rolled his low-slung racer to victory in the RéSwell Soap Box Derby on Missouri Avenue. The 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W H Crumisy won the Class B title after four races and earned a trip to Akron Ohio plus a 15000 scholarship for the All American Derby. Ross Christian finished runner-up in the competition witnessed by about 3000 spectators with police escorts clearing the course.

Two Fatalities Mark NM Holiday Road Toll

State Police logged two highway fatalities during the Independence Day weekend in New Mexico. A 19 year old from Duncan Arizona, Jim Collins, died in a crash on SR 12 north of Reserve. a 20 year old Oklahoma City soldier, PFC Vernon Chandler, died when a car rear ended a parked truck 33 miles east of Hobbs. Four others were injured.

Refugee reports say 17 Soviet tanks were destroyed near Koenigshuette amid broad Polish unrest since June 29. martial law was declared in Silesia and in Warsaw Cracow as East German and Polish upheaval spreads, with Soviet units and gas lines targeted and militants active.

Riot in Red River prompts tough police response

In Red River New Mexico a riot involving about 150 holiday visitors led to vigilant policing. Deputy Harold Lichlick reported heavy vandalism including a vacant house being stormed with two women and a 10 year old boy sieged by around 60 Texans. One woman is injured from glass and another from a rock. Four special deputies were sworn in with state police support to restore order.

Kids Stop Police, Fireworks Sellers Arrest in Brooklyn

In Brooklyn a crowd of about 200 children prevented police from arresting two fireworks sellers. Police confiscated about $7,000 worth of illegal pinwheels rockets and related items after a raid that was the sixth in two days totaling around $29,000 in seized fireworks.

Road Death Toll Rises During Long Holiday

The Fourth of July holiday saw 125 deaths in violent incidents since Friday evening. Traffic crashes caused 85 fatalities, drownings 29, and 11 from miscellaneous causes as the first full day ended. Fireworks produced no fatalities.

Wrecks East of the City Injure Seven in Two Crashes

Two two car crashes near Roswell injure seven people. In the first smash a 1952 Ford rear ends a 1938 Lincoln causing multiple injuries. In the second collision a 1952 Chevrolet hits a 1952 Mercury as Miss McEvoy and Nancy Kost travel west and north. Police investigated with local and air force hospital reports.
