In Stamford Texas the annual cowboy sports show draws ranch hands, chuck wagons, and ropers. The event celebrates old Texas ranch country with fine horses, strong cattle prices, and a festive community mood.
A death list of at least 214 with thousands injured marked Independence Day observances as the nation counted the cost of its 159th birthday celebration. The daily death toll neared averages from 1928 to 1934, with six fatalities linked to fireworks.
The Ethiopian government asks Secretary Hull to press Italy to honor the Kellogg Briand peace pact amid fears of a threatened invasion. Emperor Haile Selassie summoned William Perry George, demanding U S mediation to achieve a peaceful solution.

The Empire Builder of the Great Northern Railway derailed in Washout near Rainville Montana after a cloudburst washed away 1000 feet of track at 2 20 am. Twenty four people were injured including a 12 year old boy and a brakeman with four cars rolling over while the engine stayed upright. Passengers received first aid from three doctors and a nurse aboard undamaged coaches.
Subscriptions to the Cahoon Memorial Fund continue from across New Mexico and Roswell, with many giving as little as twenty five cents and most paying a dollar. The fund, for memorial entrances to Cahoon Park, closes next Wednesday July 10.

Santa Fe July 5 AP Governor Clyde Tingley ordered flags to fly at half staff in respect for the late R L Baca former Speaker of the House who died Wednesday.
Denver secret service chief K. Goddard disclosed two Native American men, Lewis Lolo and Thomas Edison, were detained at Gallup New Mexico for forging and inflating government checks. Edison allegedly increased a $4.80 check to $40.80 while Lolo boosted a $21 check to $25.
In Chicago a July conference of about 200 delegates debated launching a third party in 1936. Alfred Bingham of New York City urged that the party system has failed and outlined steps toward a new national movement despite legal and organizational obstacles. Some leaders cited state election laws and the La Follette experience as potential pathways.
Isabel Harvey Wegeman of Denver and Raymond C. Becker wed at Bishop's Lodge near Santa Fe in a chapel famed by a famous book. The couple left after the ceremony and plans were not released. Becker works as a geologist with the U S Soil Erosion Control Service in Santa Fe. The report also outlines a missing persons mystery in New Mexico as four Illinois tourists vanish after a road trip from Vaughn toward Socorro, sparking multi-agency searches. Twenty seven hundredths of an inch of rain fell yesterday afternoon starting after four o'clock and lasting about half an hour. A heavier rain was reported east of Roswell. The forecast remains unsettled for tonight and Saturday.
A new mailbox was installed on West Fourth Street near the drive at the rear of the post office for Roswell residents. A no parking zone was painted in front of it. Collections are 6:30, 11:30 a.m., and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. Sundays and holidays use 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. mailings. Letters or packages posted by 11:30 a.m. will catch the mort or south bound trains leaving about 1:00 p.m.

Board approved 700 licenses for retailers dispensers and clubs 35 wholesale licenses Regulations ban serving liquor on dance floors require partitioning if in same building bars in pool halls and bowling alleys must be separated from recreational facilities no resale between retailers without a wholesaler license and wholesalers who rectify or blend liquor need a rectifier and blender license.
