Remembering a fallen hero and two remembrance tales
Historic holiday remembrance features Donna Ikard connected to Southeastern New Mexico and an 1885 Lincoln County Leader piece from White Oaks. It recounts Ethel Lund and family arrival, mining roots, schooling, and wartime service of Kenneth Watson, a Navy machinist’s mate injured in 1918, with notices of his illness and death reported in Carrizozo News.

Roswell Electric's early era sparked the 1904-1910 surge
The piece recalls Roswell history from 1904 when Maynard Gunsell won the first electric franchise to serve the town, its 1910 merger with the gas company, and the 25KW plant that powered a 2000-strong population. It notes linemen as quiet heroes of the 1920s and 30s and references the 1937 Henry Fonda film Slim inspired by early electric work.
