Settlement Reached Over Jail Death In New Mexico County
A $5 million settlement was reached in the death of Douglas Edmisten at Cibola County jail in Grants New Mexico. The case notes repeated denial of medical care as Edmisten fell ill on July 7 2016 and died the next morning from a burst blood vessel after inmates pleaded for help. The county and several jail staff were named in the wrongful death suit filed by Edmistons mother. Half the settlement has been paid with the remainder due this spring. The jail site closed two weeks after the lawsuit was filed amid local budget problems and risk of bankruptcy.
