Gov. Bruce King named Adolph B. Saenz as secretary of the state Criminal Justice Department. Saenz, 50, is a former U S Customs service official from Las Cruces who now resides in Virginia and will face Senate confirmation after a press conference announcing the appointment.
Rep. Anderson, R-Chaves, pushes for 385000 to fund a three year NM State University study on growing crops with unconverted brackish water. Projects include salt resistant crops and aquaculture testing east of Roswell at the Roswell desalinization facility with aims to boost agriculture using saline water.
Senate leader Sen. C B Trujillo proposes dissolving the state's Board of Educational Finance and transferring its duties to the Legislative Finance Committee to tighten oversight of college and university budgets. BEF chairman is Wilbur L Shackleford of Roswell. Roads report notes snow packed and icy spots in parts of the southeast and north central areas with openings in the Chama region. The City Council appointed former Municipal Judge Earl Tankersley interim municipal judge until the March 4 election after Howard E Babcock's death. Bobby Ramirez, previously named interim, is ineligible to hold the position as he seeks the two year seat. A Roswell resident reports theft of a mailbox scraper item after a driver removed the red flag from the mailbox.
Ballot positions are assigned for the city council races across four wards and a two year judgeship. Candidates or their representatives drew numbers from City Clerk Sarah Carter, listing incumbents and challengers on the Progressive Roswell ticket alongside independents and local contenders. Ward 1 features Therrien Lannom Hildebrandt, Ward 2 West Harp York, Ward 3 Ashcraft McEneny, Ward 4 Homans East Watson, Grant Anaya, and five candidates for the municipal judgeship Lynch Graves Ramirez Bush Clark.
Governor says 15 BEF resignations are possible with between one and five new appointees to the 11 member Board of Educational Finance. He cited discussions with BEF chairman Wilbur L. Shackelford of Roswell and noted he did not back a bill to abolish the BEF but sees potential board changes to address lawmakers concerns about budget and operations scrutiny.
Congress approves resolutions praising Canada for aiding six Americans who escaped from Iran hiding in the Canadian Embassy with forged documents. The six, from Falls Church Virginia Crossville Tennessee Coeur d Alene Idaho and Port Charlotte Florida, will reunite with families at Dover Air Force Base Delaware before a Washington press conference.
