A freshman legislator notes chaos as water and electricity fail at the Capitol. Holes opened in front of the building delay work. a 45 foot flag pole is lowered for trenching. time clocks fail and staff log hours by hand. A temporary chemical toilet is set up labeled the Legislator's Comfort Center courtesy of Industry lobbyists.
A Roswell police narcotics operation led to predawn arrests of 34 adults and four teens across Roswell and nearby Dex ter Artesia and Hobbs after a six month undercover probe. Widespread warrants involved numerous suspects charged with marijuana heroin hash and amphetamine distribution and related offenses.
A federal judge ruled that millions of Nixon era documents and two years of White House tape recordings belong to the government. The decision voids the 1974 deal granting Nixon partial access and sets strict limits on public access while allowing a process for possible private claims.
Registered Hereford bulls from Lankford Hereford Ranch Lovington won Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at the 44th Annual Southeastern New Mexico Hereford Association Show. Police raid nets 51 narcotics arrests in Roswell area with 125 officers involved.
Harold Doc Weiler of the Association of Commerce and Industry installed a chemical toilet in front of the State Capitol while water remained off. He posted a sign about lobbyist registration laws requiring users to sign, signaling a protest or awareness effort.
State Senator John B. Irick proposes a constitutional amendment to stop municipal and public school district employees from serving in the legislature. He argues the policy creates a conflict of interest as much of the state budget funds schools. He notes eight current legislators would be affected and could have been more, urging voter choice in amending the constitution.
An American tanker Edgar M Queeny collided with the Liberian ship Corinthos unloading crude oil at a BP refinery on the Delaware River near Marcus Hook. Explosions and fires killed at least two and injured 29 with 22 aboard the Corinthos unaccounted. the Queeny's crew was reported safe. Oil spilled into the river and flames raged over a 12 block area near the refinery town.
Levi Strauss Co. of Roswell, a major local employer, laid off at least 40 workers for an undetermined period citing economic conditions. Plant manager Roger Cormier confirmed the cuts while denying upcoming workforce reductions from publicity chief John Karmann. A laid off employee expressed frustration over rumored further layoffs and blamed the economy.
