William C. Barlow retires from the Army as a major after 24 years, with 10 years on active duty as an officer. He was discharged as an ordnance depot unit master sergeant at Sandia Special Weapons Base and will move to Columbia South Carolina to enter radio and television business.
Santa Fe reports a House Public Affairs Committee vote to kill the fair trade repealers and the loss leader repeal HB16. President Eisenhower sent a 2000 word message to Congress calling for easier emigration rules for refugees and broad revisions to raise annual immigration to about 65 000 more than the current 154 857. He urged using the 1950 census for quotas, redistributing unused slots by July 1 1955, and eliminating mortgages while enabling annual admission of orphans and more southern Europeans.
