New Mexico Ethics Commission bill advances from committee
The House committee approved an 8-0 vote to move a constitutional amendment creating a nine member ethics commission with paid staff. Sponsored by Rep. Jim Dines the proposal would oversee conduct of state government lobbyists and contractors and would appoint a licensed attorney as executive director. Startup costs are estimated at 1.28 million dollars with some duties shifting from the secretary of state. Aimed at restoring public trust after scandals involving Dianna Duran and Phil Griego the measure would require signed complaints and reveal them after a response deadline. The proposal could go to voters in November if cleared by the House and Senate.
