A 20 year old Roswell man James Jimmy Brown was convicted Friday of first degree murder for the Aug. 23 1993 shooting death of Oscar Zapata after more than six hours of jury deliberation.

Dina plans to acquire Motor Coach Industries Inc and its subsidiaries through a merger with Consorcio Dina of Mexico City for about 337 million dollars. The boards approved the agreement but public shareholders must approve. Dina would own MCII while MCI executives would continue to run operations.
Roswell's TMC plant keeps steady output as President John Nasi, also head of TMC parent Motor Coach Industries, signals a high probability of winning a New York City contract for 104 buses. The run would extend production to June while MCN considers selling or closing TMC by spring with about six potential buyers in contention.

The New Mexico House Judiciary Committee tabled House Bill 53 to create an additional judgeship in the 5th Judicial District serving Chaves Lea and Eddy counties. Rep. Barbara Casey and Rep. Richard Knowles introduced the bill with Rep. Richard Olson contributing. Judge Alvin Jones called the position sorely needed as peers handle about 1800 cases annually. Eddy County meanwhile has fewer judges and lower caseloads.
Heavy rains and melted snow pushed the Ohio River beyond its banks in Parkersburg, flooding about 200 homes along the Little Kanawha and forcing families to evacuate. The river rose to 2 feet above flood stage and was forecast to crest at 5 feet. No injuries were reported. The flood also impacted Pennsylvania and Indiana rivers with multiple closures.
St Petersburg AP report: Ken Allen, 21, found a Cadillac owner's $1,000 bill stash in a hotel valet job and handed it to his boss. The owner, Herold Berthy Jr. of West Virginia, learned the money was at the hotel and recovered all but a $20 tip for the valet. Berthy praised the honesty of the valet while noting his own poverty.
The Roswell Educational Achievement Foundation proposes turning an elementary school into a technology driven center using a five computer per room lab and EduQuest IBM software. The $300,000 system would be funded by EduQuest donations and others if approved at a Roswell School Board meeting.
