Chimney sweep founder blends novelty with service in Ruidoso

Mike Cormier 26 started a Chimney Sweep business three months ago serving Roswell Ruidoso and El Paso. He uses outside work when space allows and a 15 pound weighted brush for tight spots. He operates a large dust collector and urges annual cleanings especially when pine is burned. He notes creosote caused thousands of chimney fires nationwide last year and sees new stove and fireplace advances after the energy crisis.

Inmates hold seven women and three men at B C Penitentiary

Inmates seized the British Columbia Penitentiary and held thirteen hostages including seven women and three men. RCMP negotiators met with representatives and discussed transfers to Archambault and Millhaven as talks continued over 30 hours. Officials noted ongoing unrest at the century old prison and possible transfer conditions.

House panel approves independent Albuquerque college plan

The House Education Committee backed bills to create an independent community college in Albuquerque via TVI expansion, while rejecting UNM affiliated options. Babcock seeks city judge post in Roswell election

Howard E. Babcock 63 of 111% Kansas Ave announces candidacy for municipal judge in the March 7 city election. He will face incumbent Earl G. Tankersley in what is Roswell's first contested city race. Babcock, a former Chaves County sheriff, cites crime victim concerns and proposes possible night court to improve accessibility. He has a son and two daughters.

Flight 727 Survives 8000 Foot Plunge Off Miami

103 aboard a National Airlines jet feared death as engines failed and the craft fell 8000 feet toward the Atlantic.
