Nixon presents budget with broad spending cuts planned
President Nixon called for a rigid 1974 budget ceiling of 268.7 billion and demanded death for dozens of federal programs. He warned that exceeding the total would trigger higher taxes or inflation while asserting a need to rein in spending through program terminations and reorganizations. The plan cuts social and health programs, liquidates the Office of Economic Opportunity, and aims to phase out Hill Burton hospital funding and several housing initiatives.
