Chavez name endorsed again by Roswell council panel
A second advisory body to the Roswell City Council urged naming the new recreation center after César Chavez. The General Services Committee voted 3-1 to forward the proposal to the full council, with dissent from Jeanine Corn Best. Some say the timing is premature since the facility opens no earlier than fall 2018.

Three strikes bill advances to House floor vote in NM
The House Judiciary Committee passed a bill expanding New Mexico's three strikes law in a 7 to 4 party line vote. Proponents led by Rep. Paul Pacheco argue it targets a small group of violent predators and won backing from Gov. Martinez's administration and business groups. Critics warn it strains an underfunded court system and risks ensnaring non violent offenders, with the Sentencing Commission noting only about 60 inmates would receive life terms under the measure.
